THE LITTLE BOOK ON HAIRDRESSING SUCCESS:

I met Carlos Valenzuela through the world of hair shows. He was putting together an insert for beauty schools, with the help of established educators, teaching students what they need to know about the industry. What resulted is his Little Book On Hairdressing Success, and I had the pleasure of contributing:

My personal motto to obtain and sustain clients is: One Client at a Time.

It all starts when you walk into the salon. Arrive fifteen minutes early to get a feel for how your day is going to play out. If you have some gaps of time, hop on social media and your schedule will book up quickly.

An important element to keep in mind is consistency. Each guest should be greeted the same no matter if it’s their first visit or tenth visit; they deserve to feel welcomed and special. Consultations are essential: I always ask on a 1-10 scale how much change the client is looking for—whether for a haircut, blowout, or color service. While in my chair, I am always forecasting the guest’s next visit, seasonal changes, (could be color, or growing or shortening their hair.) I want to give them something to look forward to, and show them options on how to change up their hair so that they love it.

When walking the guest to the front desk, always remember to make your recommendations for products they need to maintain their mane. Re-booking is key. If they can’t commit, give a courtesy call within a week to see how they are enjoying their hair, and to see if they are ready to book their next appointment.

Always share your excitement on what you just saw at a hair show or in a class—it shows you’re passionate for your craft.

Welcome to this wonderful industry, where we bring out the best in a person one client at a time.
